Reading the news today was shocking. Robert Enke, a well-known goalkeeper here in Germany, killed himself. The newspaper didn't mention it, but they described his character: He was an intelligent, thoughtful and sensitive person. Just like me. So I knew the reason for this suicide in the same second I read about it: He suffered from severe depression.

... I know what it feels like to have this disease. I'm suffering from it myself. It's like an awful beast within you which you have to keep under control. That takes a lot of strength, and there are these times when sickness seems to be much stronger than me. So, I can imagine what he must have felt. It's a horrible emotional pain when it seems as if there's no way out than killing yourself... I'm startled and frightened by the thought that this terrible disease made him believe that he has no other choice. I for myself try to prevent myself from that. I still have these thoughts, but as I said before - most of the time it's under control. So, nobody should be worried right now. I hope and do my best that I'll never have a similar relapse which makes me consider suicide seriously.
